From the Editor's Desk

I love spring as it’s the time of the year we all become aware of summer approaching and our energy level begins to increase.  To find out  why this happens, please read the articles ‘ Yin and Yang’  and ‘Seasonal changes in the body’ which explain the inevitable rhythm of life, based on the  principles of natural law and the movements of life - Yin /Yang and Five Phases- that lie behind the theory and philosophy of Chinese medicine.
The new addition to the treatment menu – La-Phyto facials of the season - as continuity of my approach to Chinese philosophy, has become a very popular way to maintain my clients’ beauty and well being.

In the Herb (nutrients) corner you will discover the tremendous power of the body’s own antioxidant glutathione that decreases when we grow older, stressed, or become ill.

In Tips for the season you will find a simple health routine that can help you wake up your yang energy in the morning, so that you can face the day with more motivation and radiance.

This year was very busy in the clinic.  Due to my contract with Style magazine I come in contact with so many new clients.

This year I also have learned more about cosmetic acupuncture. In May I attended the Constitutional Facial Acupuncture Renewal workshop taught by Mary Elizabeth Wakefield and Michael Angelo. These remarkable people are doing fantastic work by combining sound frequency with facial acupuncture to address the underlining constitutional imbalances in human bodies. Please visit their website www.chiakra.com to read more about changing the face of ageing.

This year the clinic will close at 2.00 pm on the 20th December and will reopen on the 5th January 2009 at 9.00 am.

Make sure you are well stocked with the products and herbs you are using.

At this special time of year I would like to thank all my past and present clients, colleagues and friends for their tremendous support during the year.

I sincerely wish you all a very merry Christmas & healthy and prosperous New Year.

Good health from the inside out

Yin and Yang

The great classic of Chinese Medicine, the Huang Di Nei Jing – “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine” compiled between 300 and 100 BC is set in a conversational form between Huang Di, the Yellow Emperor and his minister Qi Bo and the others. The Huang Di Nei Jing outlines the principles of natural law and the movements of life- Yin /Yang; Five Phases; and other important foundation work for the theory and philosophy behind Chinese medicine.

“The wise nourish life by flowing with the four seasons and adapting to cold or heat, by harmonizing joy and anger in a tranquil dwelling, by balancing yin and yang, and what is hard and soft. So it is that dissolute evil cannot reach the man of wisdom, and he will be witness to a long life.” - Huang Di Nei Jing - Suwen.

All living things, all of nature, and all phenomena can be classified into yin or yang. Yin and yang continuously maintain balance by alternating and circulating. If one becomes strong, the other becomes weak. If yin increases to the extreme it will transform into yang; if yang increases to the extreme it will transform into yin. It is easy to understand if you think about the seasons.

Yin and yang wax and wane, alternating between each other as the four seasons transform one into the other in a continuous circulatory pattern. Yang ki gradually waxes in the springtime and reaches a peak at summertime. This rule can also be seen within the example of a single day. Yang ki gradually waxes as the sun rises in the morning and reaches a peak at midday. Then as the sun sinks into the west, yang ki wanes and yin ki emerges. During the night the yin ki becomes the most active, and then gives way to yang ki again the next morning.

The natural flow of yin and yang also takes place within our bodies. In the morning we open our eyes and become active as the yang ki emerges. Our pores are triggered to open as yang ki is released through the skin. At night the yang ki is pulled in and yin ki takes over, closing the pores and protecting the body from the influence of external pathogens. Through the meridians’ circulatory pattern yang ki is plentiful at the superficial level and limited in the deep level during the daytime, and yin ki is abundant at the superficial level while during the nighttime yang ki is plentiful at the deep level.

So what happens if you party until late? You need longer recovery time next day, and end up feeling tired and unwell. You have messed up our yin and yang balance. In my clinical practice I see a plethora of symptoms of yin or yang deficiencies. The final tool for assessing the energy imbalance in the body is a pulse diagnosis. The ancient Chinese Medicine classics state that the disruption of the harmonious yin and yang condition causes natural disasters and is the root of all sickness.

I f you dislike the hot weather and prefer the cooler days you are probably a Hot Type that lacks the cooling and calming Yin energy. You may easily develop a weakness in the liver and kidney meridians and you should keep your feet warm as well as the lower back to avoid getting sick.

If you dislike the cold weather and prefer hot drinks you may represent the Cold Type that lacks the heating qualities of Yang energy, and you may be prone to develop a weakness in the lung and spleen energy. The outside cold can easily penetrate and cause respiratory and digestive problems.

Acupuncture treatment can tune -up your yin and yang energy, balance the meridians- organs function, thus increasing your immunity, so you can cherish a healthy and happy life.

Proven Ways To Better Health

Seasonal Changes in the body

With each seasonal change our bodies are subjected to different responses. Spring is ruled by the Wood element and is associated with the Liver and Gallbladder. The liver is an important organ for the balance of energy within the body. Liver stores the blood and also cleanses it to eliminate any toxins. Emotional distress brings pressure to the Liver. This will have an impact on all the other organs and also on the ligaments and tendons, which need a good healthy liver in order to be efficient. An imbalance in the liver energy will show in symptoms, like headache, migraine, anger, irritability, tension, vision disturbances and often lack of sleep, etc. Injuries are also likely to occur, because the flow of ki and blood to the muscle, tendons and related areas will be depleted.

The springtime (or the morning within a single day) is the time when everything buds and comes alive. In our bodies the ki of life in the springtime revitalizes the functioning of the liver. Thus if the liver is normal, you can be positive, and active in everything you do. This is the function of the blood, which contains the power of generation or creation.

Spring is the time for renewal and change and the best time for detoxifying your body. Detoxification is essential for all, no matter how healthy we may be or think we are. Many of my clients are beginning to understand that to have healthy bodies and radiant summer skin, it is crucial to clear away the toxic deposits from the body and switch to organic food and skin care products free of chemicals.

I believe that it is essential to cleanse the body of often a lifetime’s accumulated wastes, before it is capable of effectively utilizing nutrients and supplements.

If you are concerned about detoxification treatments or healthy, natural skin care products you may choose to give Joanna’s services a try, or purchase the gift voucher for someone you care for.

Scandinavian sauna

Scandinavian sauna often called ‘de-tox box’ is beneficial for reducing toxin deposits, especially of heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury and lead,  as well as improving skin tone, reducing cellulite and assisting in weight control.

The skin is our largest eliminative organ - the “third kidney”. It is generally considered that the skin should eliminate 30 % of body wastes such as salts, acids and toxins by way of perspiration. Due to the lack of physical work and an overly sedentary life style the skin of most people today has degenerated as an eliminative organ. It is of vital importance that the eliminative activity of the skin is revitalized. Taking a Scandinavian Sauna regularly will help to dispel excess toxins stored in the body cells that help relieve the liver and the kidneys from their endless duty of detoxification. This then allows them to rest and rebuild. This is particularly important if the kidneys and the liver are not working optimally.

I have tested the efficacy of the sauna on my clients thorough the use of Ionic Heavy Metal Testing with striking results.

Sauna is also beneficial for post exercise recovery and as a fever therapy (hyperthermia) for infections.

When water hits the hot sauna rocks, the released steam creates beneficial humidity that helps rejuvenate your skin and create a relaxing feeling due to negatively charged ions that have been released.

Salt glow body treatment

Salt glow body treatment – Jericho Energizing Salt Scrub combines Dead Sea minerals with natural Kiwi Mango oil or Peach & Honey oil that is known for its energizing effects. Gentle and reviving, the scrub exfoliates the top layer of dead skin cells, helps circulation and rejuvenates your skin.

The Dead Sea, as the lowest depression of the Earth, contains the richest source of natural minerals and trace elements.

Cleopatra’s secret

Dead Sea mud wrap called “Cleopatra’s secret”, works as a big poultice that draws out the toxic deposits stored in the adipose tissue as well as infusing the broadest range of minerals. (The salinity of the water outside the cells in our bodies is the same as the ocean). While cocooned in a thermal blanket, a gentle scalp massage of selected acupressure points promotes a state of deep relaxation and revitalizes your spirit.

Lymphatic drainage air pressomassage

Lymphatic drainage air pressomassage treatment that effectively targets cellulite deposits and lymphatic congestion, reduce puffiness and swelling, thus clearing cellular waste and helping to decongest the vascular and lymphatic circulation. This results in detoxification and oxygenation of the tissues. If you do not lead an active life then it is likely that you have a fairly stagnant lymphatic system and the condition of your lymphatic system has a huge effect on your immune responses. The lymphatic system plays a fundamental role in clearing acidic debris from the tissues of the body. Effective liver restoration and tissue detoxification is dependent on the immune and lymphatic systems. Poor lymphatic function promotes toxin accumulation and compromises your immunity. Many people are initially surprised at how different this form of massage is. It combines gentle pressure with soft pumping movements in the direction of the lymph nodes in the body. The pressure is much lighter than in other forms of massage and all the movements are carried out slowly.

People who receive regular lymphatic drainage air pressomassage tend to have fewer flus and colds. As far as immune modulation is concerned researchers say that a person is as old as the immune system. If you can have a perfect immune system, the rest of the body will follow and you will be as young as your immune system again.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs were used for centuries as an effective detoxification method. They can control the level of hormones such as cortisol and insulin and increase the level of neurotransmitters such as serotonins and endorphins that help distress your body and mind. Balancing and strengthening the yin and yang energy flow in relating meridians through acupuncture treatments could be another option to strengthen your immune system

The other benefit of the immune-modulating effect of acupuncture is the reduction of allergic factors. An allergy is an accumulation of fluid. It prevents you from absorbing nutrients and causes many other symptoms. Any person who has significant allergies is in a constant state of nutritional deficiency.

Regular Ionic Heavy Metal Testing (IHMT) is advisable for all of us.

Joanna’s Holistic Facials

- Joanna’s Holistic Facials, especially the lymphatic facial, releases congestion in specific “neurolymphatic reflexes” along the stomach, large intestine and gallbladder meridians and helps to eliminate impurities from the body and face. This facial is effective for puffy eyes, swollen face, blemished or acne skin.

- La Phyto “Season” Aroma-Clay Facials are based on five Chinese Seasons: Spring, Summer, In -Between Season, Autumn, Winter.

Dermatherapy is especially beneficial for people with acne. The treatment combines with targeted Bio-Pacific skin care product, Formula 1 or 2, drowning out the toxic deposit of inflammation, giving progressive improvement of the condition.

Ageing and pigmented skin also greatly benefit from the Dermatherapy treatment. The anti-ageing products such as Collagen Moist Gel, Hydra Firming Gel or Intensive Repair Serum are infused with the help of microcurrent that penetrates the epidermis and delivers sub-dermal efficacies.

If the cells that make up the various layers of the skin could receive certain nutrients and antioxidants both internally and externally, cell health and function in all layers of the skin could be optimized, resulting in healthier and younger looking skin.

Herbs (Nutrients) corner

A major cause of ageing is the deterioration of the mitochondria, the energy-producing components of the cell. This results in reduced cellular metabolic activity, the accumulation of cellular debris, and eventual death of the cell.  A significant cause of this deterioration is the accumulation of destructive free radicals causing oxidative stress that disables enzymes and other chemicals. Free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons on their outer ring. In attempting to become balanced they constantly steal electrons from the molecules that make up the cells in our bodies, destroying or damaging tissues and organs.  Once this occurs, they weaken physical vitality and can damage body systems, including the cardiovascular, neurological and immune systems.

According to Dr. Robert Keller and other scientists, free radicals contribute to cellular inflammation causing almost all diseases or health-related symptoms, ranging from ageing of the skin, to chronic fatigue, to deterioration of cell membranes, leading to cell destruction and damage to DNA, which may cause precancerous conditions. Antioxidant therapy is crucial for prevention of cellular inflammation. One of the most effective nutrients to maintain youthful cellular energy metabolism is glutathione, the body’s own antioxidant.  Glutathione degrades when we grow older, stressed, or become ill. Hundreds of scientific studies show that low glutathione levels lead to poor liver and lymphatic function, that in turn leads to accumulation of acidic toxins that circulate through the body causing havoc in the system Please refer to Autumn/Winter 2008 edition of Joanna’s Health and Beauty Newsletter for more information about the power of glutathione.

The breakthrough nutritional supplement called MAXGXL was recently developed by Dr Keller; please visit the website www.maxgxl.com to learn more.

Personally I have been taking this supplement for the last couple of months and now I’m able to do the things that I was unable to do 10 years ago.

This product comes in easy to swallow capsules that contain glutathione accelerators; the building blocks that help manufacture the glutathione in our liver. It also contains the Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C as Calcium Ascorbate and herbal extracts of Cordiceps, Milk Thistle, Silimarin and Quercetin etc.

Physiologically the body contains small amounts of alpha lipoic acid inside the mitochondria that remain locked in the enzyme system and do not flow freely in the cell. Alpha lipoic acid when taken as a nutritional supplement performs as antioxidants as well as a booster of ATP energy production in our cells by helping the mitochondria convert food into energy.

The collagen connection
Collagen is a protein our body uses to create skin, scar tissue, ligaments, tendons, and blood vessels. Collagen makes up 75 percent of our skin. When it begins to deteriorate, lines and wrinkles form. Maintaining a healthy collagen is of major importance in keeping a youthful face and body, because more than a third of the body's protein is collagen.

Vitamin C performs many different important functions in the body and is essential in the production of collagen. Vitamin C (Calcium Ascorbate) together with glutathione, alpha lipoic acid and other ingredients   functions via several mechanisms to protect cells from the effects of aging. They help protect the fat-soluble vitamins A and E and the fatty acids in cell membranes, saving the cell from oxidative stress, increasing mitochondrial ATP activity and reducing harmful cellular inflammation throughout the body.
